Our Story
The story of Mountain Fence Company began in 1996, when Marvin Lucas and his wife started serving Ashe County one post, one gate, and one neighbor at a time. In a tight-knit mountain community, a lasting reputation was built by showing up, delivering solid craftsmanship, and standing firmly behind every job.
Today, that founding commitment continues under owners Tommy Hampton and Rick LaBarre. When they took the reins, they preserved the bedrock values Marvin established and built on them. To meet clients' evolving needs, they renamed the company Mountain Fence and Deck, expanded into full-service deck design and construction, invested in a state-of-the-art facility, and grew their team of professionals, all while staying rooted in the trust earned from that very first fence.
Through it all, they have remained exactly what they started as: neighbors. Their team continues to support the community by stocking local food banks, meeting homeowners at the Spring Blowing Rock Home Show, and sponsoring the events that help mountain towns thrive.
Mountain Fence and Deck is a North Carolina licensed general contractor (GC #107410), a distinction that gives clients confidence from the first conversation through final inspection. The team manages each project from conception to completion, including design services, complex zoning laws, setbacks, building permits, Health Department approvals, and final inspections. They handle the details, helping to ensure that your project moves forward without unnecessary delays.

Over the years we have grown from a fence company into a full outdoor building team, with every style of fence, custom decks, gates and operators, and outdoor structures handled by one accountable local crew.
Our newest chapter is Mountain Fence of Asheville, a fencing-only second location serving Asheville and the surrounding areas with the same playbook that built our name in the High Country.

About Us
Since 1996. We started serving Ashe County one fence at a time and have grown into a full service fence and deck builder for the whole High Country while keeping the same values.
We are locally owned by Tommy Hampton, a Watauga County native, and Rick LaBarre. You are working with local owners, not a national chain.
Yes. We are a North Carolina licensed general contractor (GC #107410) and fully insured. That license means we manage zoning, setbacks, building permits, and Health Department approvals ourselves, and every project is built to local code and inspected.
Fourteen counties across the High Country and Western North Carolina, from Boone and Blowing Rock to Asheville and Hendersonville.
