How to Choose a Fence Contractor in the High Country

Not all fence contractors are the same. Here is what to look for, the red flags to avoid, and the questions to ask before you hire.

What to look for

A good fence contractor should be licensed and insured, have real local experience, and give you a clear written quote with no vague line items. Local experience matters more than most people realize in the mountains, because setting a fence that lasts on slope, rock, and freeze thaw is a different job than fencing a flat lot. Ask how long they have worked in the area and whether they can show you nearby projects.

You should also feel like they listened. A contractor who walks your property, asks about your goals, and explains the tradeoffs is one who will build the right fence.

Red flags to avoid

Be cautious of a contractor who will not put the quote in writing, asks for a very large deposit up front, has no verifiable local track record, or is vague about who will actually do the work and how the posts will be set. A price that is far below everyone else's often means corners will be cut somewhere you cannot see, like post depth.

The cheapest quote is not a bargain if the fence leans in two years.

Questions worth asking

A few good questions tell you a lot: Are you licensed and insured? How deep will the posts be set? Do you handle permits and the utility locate? What is the timeline? Do you stand behind the work if something goes wrong? Can I see reviews or nearby projects? Clear, confident answers are a good sign.

We are always glad to answer all of these, because the way a fence is built is exactly what sets a lasting job apart.
