A standard residential deck is typically designed to support 40 to 50 pounds per square foot of live load, which is the minimum specified in the International Residential Code (IRC). That sounds like plenty until you start stacking up what a fire pit area or outdoor kitchen actually weighs.
When you add those numbers up, a standard 50 psf deck can be over capacity before a single person sits down with a plate of food. The framing, footings, and beam spans all need to be sized for the actual loads. This is not optional. It is basic structural engineering, and it has to happen at the design stage.
