About Deer Fence

Deer Fence in the High Country

If deer treat your garden like a buffet, the answer is a proper deer fence, and the single most important factor is height. A determined High Country deer can clear a fence under six feet with ease, which is why standard fencing fails to keep them out. Built tall and continuous, a deer fence finally protects your vegetables, orchard, and landscaping for good.

We install deer fencing from nearly invisible poly and metal mesh on sturdy posts, ideal for gardens and orchards, to tall welded wire, wood, or vinyl where you want a more finished look or added privacy. In most cases we fence just the zone you want to protect rather than the whole property, which keeps the cost sensible and puts the protection exactly where you need it.

Is Deer Fence Right for You?

Best For

  • Vegetable gardens and raised beds
  • Orchards and young trees
  • Ornamental landscaping and flower beds
  • Protecting a specific zone economically
  • Properties with heavy deer pressure

What to Consider

Getting Deer Fence Right

Plan on seven to eight feet to reliably keep deer out. Where a tall fence is not the look you want, two shorter fences set a few feet apart, or a fence angled outward, can also discourage deer because they cannot judge the jump.

The details decide success: posts set deep enough to carry the height, mesh kept tight, and a bottom that meets the ground so nothing slips underneath. A self closing gate keeps the protection complete.

Questions

Deer Fence FAQs

How much does deer fencing cost?

Deer fence is one of the most economical ways to protect gardens and landscaping per foot, since the heavy duty mesh costs less than solid fencing. Height, run length, gates, and wooded terrain drive the total, and we quote it after a free on site walk of the line.

Will a deer fence block my view?

No. Modern deer fencing uses black mesh that virtually disappears against trees and terrain from a short distance away. It is the least visible fence we build, which is why view lot owners choose it.

Does deer fencing really work in the NC mountains?

Yes. At seven to eight feet, deer stop jumping it. Around Boone, Blowing Rock, and Asheville, deer pressure on plantings is constant year round, and a properly built deer fence is the only solution that reliably ends it.

Deer fence or repellents, which works?

Repellents and deer resistant plantings help at the margins, but hungry mountain deer eat through both every winter. A physical barrier at the right height is the only fix that works every night of the year.

How tall does a deer fence need to be?

Seven to eight feet is the reliable height to keep deer out in the High Country. Shorter fences are easily cleared by our local deer.

Is deer mesh or a solid fence better?

Both work at the right height. Poly or metal mesh is affordable and nearly invisible, perfect for gardens. A tall solid fence also keeps deer out while adding privacy or a finished boundary.

Do I have to fence my whole property?

Usually not. Fencing just the garden, beds, or orchard you want to protect is far more economical and just as effective as enclosing your entire acreage.

Can you add a gate to a deer fence?

Yes. A self closing gate keeps the enclosure complete so deer cannot slip through an open access point.
